1. Hotels in Old Bagan

Old Bagan is the original village where most people lived before being relocated to New Bagan in 1990. Many main temples are located in this area like Bu Paya. Ananda, Thatbyinnyu,.. The whole are is surrounded by ancient city walls. Most hotels in Old Bagan are from midrange to upper class. It is the quietest area in Bagan with few shops and restaurants inside.

2. Hotels in New Bagan

New Bagan was established in 1990 to relocate people from Old Bagan. There are no important temples in or around New Bagan but most temples are relatively close. New Bagan is a real town with midrange accommodation and plenty of local shops and restaurants. It has the largest number of hotels in Bagan thus it can fit different travel styles. It is also a good place to stay if you want to interact with local people.

Nyaung U is the largest area, also the transportation hub in Bagan. The airport, train station and bus station are all located here. While most temples are a bit away, the Shwezigon Pagoda is inside the area. Most hotels in Nyaung U are of a lower category. However, there is a wide selection of restaurants and shops. The atmosphere is Nyang U is great. You can see regular processions of people doing their rituals. If you are short of time, stay in Nyaung U.
